Drake-backed fried chicken chain opens first Oakland restaurant this week

Fans of the buzzy, Drake-backed franchise Dave’s Hot Chicken have only a few days to count down until the newest Bay Area location opens its doors.

The company announced its Uptown Oakland franchise, its seventh in the Bay Area, is set to open on Friday, Jan. 20 at 2228 Broadway, the former home of Old Brooklyn Cafe & Bakery. The chain’s menu of Nashville-style fried chicken , in spice levels ranging from mild to “reaper,” comes in tenders and stuffed into “slider” sandwiches with kale slaw. Sides like mac and cheese, French fries and coleslaw are also available.

The rapidly growing chain began in 2017 as a Los Angeles parking lot pop-up, and has since expanded to over 60 nationwide locations, with the vast majority of these in California. Dave’s Hot Chicken operates existing locations in the East Bay, South Bay and Santa Rosa. As previously reported by The Chronicle , Union City and San Leandro Dave’s franchise owner George Almeida is the operator behind the newest location. In Oakland, Dave’s joins homegrown hot chicken outfits such as World Famous Hotboys and Kowbird from barbecue chef Matt Horn.

The Dave of Dave’s Hot Chicken also has roots in Northern California: Co-founder Dave Kopushyan touts his training in chef Thomas Keller’s restaurant group. Aside from Drake, other investors include actor Samuel L. Jackson and former California first lady Maria Shriver. In 2019, the investor group behind fast-casual pizza chain Blaze Pizza purchased a 50% stake in Dave’s to open franchises across the country.
